Field trials with BONSILAGE ALFA silage additive yield convincing results in regions with challenging ensiling conditions

SCHAUMANN has extended its renowned BONSILAGE range by yet another innovative silage additive: BONSILAGE ALFA, a product specially developed for lucerne and grass clover. Following several successful trials both on a laboratory scale and in various field operations in Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic, this novel combination of lactic acid bacteria strains has now been released to specifically match the complex silage conditions found when ensiling lucerne, clover and grass clover. The product can be used over a relatively wide dry matter range of about 30-45% DM.  

A new LAB combination provides protection against fermentation pests and overheating and ensures that pH levels are efficiently reduced. 

BONSILAGE ALFA combines L. paracasei, L. plantarum and Lc. lactis, that is three homofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB), with L. buchneri, a heterofermentative LAB strain. Both L. paracasei and the recently registered L. plantarum are quite unique in their ability to decompose fructans, ensuring that pH levels are efficiently reduced even with silage that is difficult to ensile, such as lucerne or clover. Lc. lactis is known to inhibit fermentation pests such as clostridia and enterobacteria directly. L. buchneri additionally ensures that acetic acid and propanediol are released in a controlled manner throughout the ensiling process, which provides superior protection against overheating compared to untreated silage.

This new product has been successfully tested on various farms in Germany (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt, Rhineland-Palatinate), Spain and in the Czech Republic, which is known for its extensive lucerne production. The results of both laboratory and field trials are impressive: balanced fermentation acid patterns ensure excellent taste, and the resulting silage is of outstanding hygienic quality (see figure). Mr Förster, the manager of the Kolochau dairy farm in Brandenburg (Germany), has tested the product and is highly satisfied: “The silage is very well accepted by the animals, plus it is very stable both in the clamp and in the feed trough. I’ll be using BONSILAGE ALFA again!”


Convincing trial results for lucerne silage from regions with challenging ensiling conditions 

Field trials from other regions also yielded outstanding results, (see figure). Despite variously difficult ensiling conditions due to increased raw ash and reduced dry matter contents, BONSILAGE ALFA produced stable silage with a balanced ratio of lactic acid and acetic acid in all trial regions. Even lucerne with a degree of moisture that would normally be considered excessive, e.g. the trial silage from Flessau or Rhineland-Palatinate, with only 23% and 27% DM respectively, could be successfully ensiled without significant amounts of butyric acid being generated. All silage products impressed with very low counts of clostridia spores, moulds and yeasts. The trial farms additionally reported that the silage was tasty and yielded good milking results.
